LEAP

LEAP is the first step in our CBH leadership training. You will be introduced to the basics of leadership styles, communication, and camp counseling. Spend time hangin’ with your camp friends, working with younger campers, and havin’ lots of fun!

CIT I

Explore the idea of being a camp counselor through the Counselor-in-Training program. This is a leadership program designed for those who are interested in working at camp. In CIT I, you will spend the first part of your stay learning about leadership, teaching styles, and developing your own. You will observe, shadow, develop resources, spend time in program areas, and participate in discussions. Take an out-of-camp trip to visit other camps; meet other CITs and learn how their programs run. Prerequisite: completion of LEAP, PA, LIT (VIT), or comparable leadership experience

CIT II

Learn more about camp operations and continue working on your leadership development through CIT II! The majority of your time in CIT II will be spent working on specialized skills, rotating in and out of units, working with campers, spending time in various program areas, and putting your leadership skills into practice. You will choose one of the following specializations:

WIT II (Wrangler-in-Training) will get to put their horse knowledge into practice by spending time at the barn, assisting with lessons, helping in all areas of horse and facilities maintenance, assisting in the units with the horse campers, and possibly planning a horse trip – ride the adventure!

LIT IIs (Lifeguard-in-Training)* will focus mostly on receiving American Red Cross Lifeguarding certifications and getting in time on the waterfront. You will also continue to develop your leadership skills while spending some time on waterfront risk management and perfecting your skills. Help assist on the waterfront. All fees for certification cards and materials are included in the camp fees.

Prerequisite: ability to swim 500 yards continuously; able to dive to depths of 10 to 15 feet; comfortable in the water *Must be age 15 at the time of the program to earn certification from the American Red Cross

TLIT II (Trip Leader-in-Training) spend time working with the adventure director, learning how trips out-of-camp work while strengthening and developing outdoor skills needed in the wilderness. You will get the opportunity to put your skills to the test while assisting with an out-of-camp trip.

ALIT II (Arts Leader-in-Training) will focus on spending time at the Tamarack, working with the arts advisor to create art lessons, work with art programs, and continue to develop your creative leadership skills.

NLIT II (Nature Leader-in-Training) will focus on nature & environmental leadership skills, developing curriculum that will be used at camp, spend time creating our nature center, and working in the units.

CIT II (Counselor-in-Training) will focus on planning, scheduling, and implementing activities with girls. You will also begin to develop resources and focus on the skills needed to be a strong and successful counselor.

Prerequisite: completion of CIT I or comparable leadership experience

INTERNS

This is it!! This is the big adventure, the final stage before becoming a camp counselor. Step up and assume many of the same responsibilities as your camp counselors by leading activities, singing songs, and making lifelong friends. There is a 2-week commitment that you must make along with attending parts of staff training and our Intern Weekend training. Send in your camp registration in order to receive an application packet. Once you receive your application packet, fill it out and return it to the camp director. Once this has been done and all materials are received, an interview will be set up. PLEASE NOTE: this will be a competitive process and not all applicants may be accepted into the Intern program. Prerequisite: must have successful completion of CIT II, WIT II, LIT II, or TLIT II or equivalent; must be entering 12th grade in the fall - NO EXCEPTIONS.

Looking for something to do with your troop this summer? Or, are your girls interested in participating in activities with which you need help? Check out Troop Camp at Camp Black Hawk! CBH staff will lead a variety of programs for you and your girls. Choose from a variety of troop camp options. Transportation may be available at an additional fee. Craft fanatics unite! You get to spend half of each day using your creative talents while still having time to hike, swim, and do all your favorite camp activities. PAWS (Potters, Artists, Woodworkers, Sculptors)

CSI (Camp Scene Investigation)

Do you love a good mystery? Do you love nature? Then, this is the perfect escapade for you! Your Chief Investigator will meet you at camp and will give you clues to unwrap a mystery. ON BELAY!

Experience the ultimate Camp Black Hawk adventure! You and your new friends will tackle the group initiatives course and climbing wall. Then, challenge yourself on our high ropes course. CANOE THE FLAMBEAU

If you enjoy canoeing and camping out, come discover Wisconsin’s Northwoods by paddlin’ the Flambeau! PORCUPAKIN’

Backpack the Upper Peninsula of Michigan! Experience waterfalls and the rugged shoreline of Lake Superior. Begin your trip at camp preparing for your 5 to 7 day trip to Porcupine Mountains State Park. Learn how to pack your pack, setup a tent, dehydrate your food, and get to know your trip mates. You’ll design a large portion of your trip. Bring your own backpack, sturdy hiking boots, and wool socks. A detailed packing list will be included in your confirmation packet.

APOSTLE ISLAND EXPLORERS

NEWLY UPDATED & EXTENDED to 10 DAYS Want to try backpacking and wilderness camping? Excellent! Then, Apostle Island Explorers is right for you. The first few days at camp, we’ll prepare for the trip. Then, spend a night or two exploring local hiking trails. Finally, we’ll travel to Bayfield, WI, to catch the ferry to the Apostle Islands. With your new camp friends, set up camp for the next 2 to 4 nights. While on the island, hike, swim in Lake Superior, sleep in trip tents, and cook over camp stoves or fires. ASCENDERS & TREKKERS

Get ready for a rockin’ adventure! Spend (2) nights in camp getting ready to head out to northern Minnesota where you’ll get to hike a portion of the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT) and climb some of the most beautiful outdoor climbing areas. This trip is a challenge – be prepared! You’ll hike up to 10 miles per day along the SHT.

HORSE EXPLORERS

Try this super fun-filled taste of camp life! Make new friends, learn camp songs, and spend time at the barn learning about the horses while working on your ground skills such as how to lead a horse, how to approach a horse, and horse safety. On your last day, depending on the group’s comfort around the horses, you will get the chance to get on and ride in the riding arena. This program focuses on helping you become comfortable around the horses and ready to move onto the next horse camp experience.

JUNIOR & CADETTE HORSE CAMP

Come horse around at CBH! All ability levels are welcome to participate in these programs. You’ll do a riding evaluation on your first day and be placed in a riding group with other campers of similar abilities. Spend the week improving your confidence and skills in the arena. An average of two (2) hours per day will be spent at the barn. The rest of your time will be spent swimming, hiking, cooking over an open fire, and having lots of fun!

Spend a week working on your riding skills with your camp friends! This is for advanced beginners who are comfortable with their horses at a walk and trot. Spend time in the arena brushing up on your skills, then head out on the camp trails. When not riding you will spend time learning more about horse care and trail safety. Don’t worry – there’ll be plenty of time to swim, do arts, sing ‘round the campfire, and just hang out.

Prerequisite: must have completed CBH Horse Camp I or equivalent; be able to control your horse at a walk and trot in the arena

GALLOPING GOURMET

This program has everything from saddles to saucepans!! Learn to ride horses and get creative with outdoor cooking. Your horseback riding lessons will focus on mounting, dismounting, turning, and controlling your horse at a walk. If your group is ready, you will get to hit the trail once you have the basics mastered. After your ride, spend time using your cooking creativity. Cook in anything from a cardboard box to a tin can . . . you can even take your food with you on a trail ride plus cook at one of our outpost sites. Finish your day with gourmet s’mores! Giddy up, gourmets!

EQUESTRIANS

Spend two weeks working on your intermediate riding skills. Help feed the horses, saddle and groom them, and take care of the barn. If your riding group is ready, you may venture out on the camp trails. Once you are at camp, you’ll go through a riding evaluation and be placed in a riding group based on your abilities. Plus, we make sure you have lots of time to enjoy other camp activities, too!

RIDING OUT

If you love to trail ride and have extensive horse experience, then this camp is for you! Spend time in the arena brushing up on your riding skills before heading out on the trail for an overnight adventure. You must pass a rider skill evaluation to ride on the overnight.

RIDING OUT AT (All Trail) 

If you have completed the ‘Riding Out’ program and enjoy trail rides and overnights, you’re ready to ride on to this advanced horse program. You will spend time planning your overnights, playing games on horseback, and taking a short trip out-of-camp. Spend a short time in the arena brushing up before you hit the dusty trails. You will get trail time each day, dependent on weather and trail conditions. Trail ride durations will vary; however, you will spend a minimum of (2) hours with the horses daily. If your group is not ready for the overnights, you will do an all day trail ride and trail lunch.

RODEO

Looking to expand your western knowledge & riding abilities? During your stay, you’ll learn barrel racing techniques such as the cloverleaf, quadrangle, and pole bending patterns. Come learn about show grooming and basic roping. Once you have practiced your skills, participate in an All Camp CBH Rodeo of your own! As they say at the rodeo, “now, that’s a wild ride!”

WATER WAVES

HOGWARTS ENCHANTMENT

Experience what life is like at Hogwarts. Learn enchanting spells, try your own kitchen chemistry, develop your own potions, and make a clay dragon for protection! Top off the week with a game of Quidditch--CBH style. Don’t worry! There’ll be plenty of time to swim, eat s’mores, and hang out.

HIP HOOP IT

Learn how to have lots of fun while being as active as you can. Work with camp’s Zumba instructor to learn various dance techniques including Salsa, Cumbia, Hip-Hop, and Merengue. Along with your new dance skills, learn how to hula hoop to music and to dance with your hoop. You will get your very own hoop to take home with you.

WOMEN’S WEEK

Women’s Week is a retreat from life to play in the Northwoods! For women 18 and older only! Come enjoy the pristine beauty of CBH’s lakes, bogs, and forests. The choice of activities is endless! Teach and/or learn a craft, sing Girl Scout songs, play board games, swim and boat on our two lovely lakes, line dance with old and new friends, hike and geocache, join a book discussion or knitting circle, take a nap in shade, and help cook a meal.
